14-year-old boy Shinji arrives in Tokyo-3, a heavily fortified outpost that’s survived “Second Impact,” a calamity leaving humankind vulnerable to alien machines referred to as Angels. Last hope for survival rests with government agency NERV (whose motto reads, “God is in his heaven, all is right with the world”) and its gigantic Evangelion fighting artillery, a human-mechanical hybrid designed by Shinji’s distant father, Gendou.

OMFG, after agonising for what seemed like an eternity, the wait has payed off!! Now, to organize a gathering of Malaysian Otakus to go and catch it together.

ACGC 2008: A leech is fine too.

Apologies for the lack of posts lately, somehow I failed to bring myself to write anything at all for the past week. But I shall put that to rest with this post.

Yesterday on the 22th of March I attended the ACGC 2008 at Berjaya Times Square, a shopping complex in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. My main objective of the day was to cover the cosplay competition and meeting up with local otakus for the day.

Somehow, as if the wheels of fate conspired to thwart me I ran into a string of problems to reach my destination such as traffic jams etc. To further dampen my mood, the event was more centered on the gaming aspect. Even with advance warnings that gaming was the main event, I could not shake the feeling that the anime part of the event was used to lure otakus into it. To heap more misery on me, I found out that the cosplay competition was actually slated for Sunday, March 23rd. *insert facepalm*

But still I soldiered on and managed to take some rather acceptable photos of cosplayers. The event location was indoors and it played havoc with my camera as the lighting was terrible and my camera’s flash was nowhere near capable enough to provide adequate lighting.

The main highlight of the day for me was meeting up with the local network of otakus. They were a really nice bunch of folks who took a newcomer like me in without hesitation. (Surprisingly enough I remember that one of them actually thought I would be a girl. LOL?) Thanks to all of you for showing me a good time. One of them was actually my senior from college whom I had known all along but never suspected him to be an otaku vice versa. I guess it really is a small world.

And now, I present to you the pics. Please don’t expect too much. Also, I was unable to attend the second day of the event due to personal reasons so I did not cover the cosplay competition.

Anon delivers once more.
Rei cosplay. Borderline acceptable.
Miyuki cosplay. OMG NOO!!!!

Some decent looking girls in seifuku. Have no bloody clue what game promotion has to do with seifukus.
Emoism i guess.

The leeching festival is alive and well.
Commander Chaos delivers the goods once more.
Bah. bullshit weather has been plaguing my area lately.

SONY PSP COSPLAY: The Force is STRONG with this event.

Third con i attended this year and so far the best one that i have been too. This time the event took place at The Curve Mutiara Damansara, a hip and happening place for mainly youths. This time around, the organizers held the event outdoors which really helped photography as there was copious amounts of natural lighting to go around.

Also, I met fellow comrade e-jump there and had a really nice time hanging out with him. lanie-emon, did you go? didnt see you there.

The event attracted a large number of cosplayers this time around. Most likely because of the loot given out by SONY. Remember folks, larger financial backing = better event. Well, most of the time anyways. Money is still no substitute for RAW passion.

Didn’t go around the booths much this time around. Too many cosplayers to steal my attention.

Enough of talk now, time for pic-dump. Lulz (pics are arranged in chronological order BTW.)

Hey hands of the Maiden, Jack. I got here first. LOL

Hand over the Booty NAO!!!
Ancient Chinese warrior?
Nice Commando chick.
(cookies for anyone who gets that)
The gattling gun makes its appearance.
Knife fighting. How cool is that?
AT field anyone?
(recreated from NGE when Rei broke through the AT field of an Angel to plant a N2 Mine. Not shown, a mini nuclear reaction the irradiated both men and turned them to ashes)
Shit, a pissed Jedi.
Poor captain Jack. In the wrong place at the wrong time once again.

A stranded Klingon. (did i spell that right?)

Darth Nihilus from KOTOR 2 pwning a Jedi with Force Lightning.
(Not shown, the exploded head of the Jedi. deemed too extreme for publishing)

Stranded SG1 team interviewing a Jedi.

Sailor Pluto looking great there.
(thank the wind for giving the shot a more dynamic effect)

Vader got third prize. Well deserved IMO.
Captain Jack Sparrow coming in an honorable second.
My personal favorite Commando coming in FIRST! YAY!!
(looks like he got an upgrade again, note the rebreather?)
Group Photo

Taking a shot with Commando please ignore my face.
Had a lightsaber duel with the Sith Lord himself to round up my day.
Getting pwned by THE DARK LORD. One of the Best moment in my life so far. LOL
(not shown in image, me getting sliced in half by the lightsaber and cooked by Force Lightning.)

Note. My dad did quite a few of those shots. I guess you can tell them apart easily from my crappy ones. My old man im proud to say has some really cool skills.

And now, for a quick summary of the event.

1) Lots of cosplayers
2) Great venue
3) The Force is strong in this event
4) Larger crowd this time around
5) Captain Jack Sparrow!!!
6) Had the support of the Science Fiction community. Great folks they are.

1) Weather threatened to rain. I think it did some time after i left.
2) I still see Naruto and Bleach cosplayers ……… needs more variety.
3) Still feel its a bit over commercialized.
